An Ode to Our Book Club

A year ago this month, I attended my first meeting with the Betty’s Books Graphic Novel Book Club (GNBC) after toiling with the idea in my head for months. It was a period of massive upheaval in my life- I had just quit a soul-crushing job and was struggling with self-isolation. I knew I needed somewhere to just get out and go talk to people, but where could I go that was both low-stakes and also mentally stimulating? Betty’s Books has long been a safe space in the back of my mind, and I missed the liberal-arts-degree experience of diving into media with others. Lo and behold, the GNBC was exactly what I needed: a group of wonderfully accepting people who shared my passion for comics.

It has been such a pleasure being a part of this crew, especially watching it grow during my year of attendance. My introverted self rarely looks forward to social events, but the GNBC meetings always get me excited- even if that means I have to binge-read through the book of choice the night before. The attendees come from all realms of comic enjoyment, offering insightful perspectives that make the books we read even more valuable to me. Thus, I’d like to highlight some of my favorite picks over the past year! If you’ve ever considered joining us, I highly encourage you to take the plunge. Plus, book club picks are 15% off, and who doesn’t love a discount? Meetings are at 6:30 P.M. every first Wednesday of the month!
