This time, I’ll be providing recommendations based on your favorite starters from generations 4-6, so we’ve got a motley crew from Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos. Per usual, I make no promises about the accuracy of my personality assessments based purely on Pokémon preference, but I can absolutely vouch for the quality of the books listed.

Sure, it may seem a little predictable to recommend a book prominently featuring Sun Wukong for the Pokémon line quite literally based on Sun Wukong, but American Born Chinese is worth reading in any context. Trust me when I say that this book has an indomitable spirit that would make any fire monkey proud. Don’t let its simplistic artwork and lighthearted tone fool you– this is a comic with layers that you’ll be peeling back for days to come. The novel rotates between three stories: a take on the classic fable of the Monkey King, the life of a Chinese-American boy trying to fit in at school, and the woes of a young man being visited by his cousin, who appears as an amalgamation of every terrible Asian stereotype you can imagine. No spoilers here, but I guarantee that the means by which these stories interact will surprise you. With its short chapters and humorous dialogue, it’s an easy read, but will still challenge the reader to assess their own relationship with race and identity.

While the horror genre might feel a bit out of sync with the rest of the Pokémon world, I have a feeling that Snivy fans would appreciate a classy, discerning spook. Bonus points for one decked out in botanical imagery! Coming from the same dynamic duo behind the Monstress series, The Night Eaters retains their signature intricacy while embracing a much more familiar narrative. At the forefront of the book’s success is Takeda’s exquisite artwork, crafting lively garden scenery, expressive characters, and visceral horror all with care and attention to detail. I was entranced by the book’s cover alone, and the inside pages certainly delivered on its promises. The story follows a fascinating and quirky family- a stern, cold-as-ice mother, comically laid-back father, hotheaded and self-conscious daughter, and meek, nerdy son. Through a bizarre, supernatural evening while tending to the creepy, abandoned house next door, family bonds are tested and secrets are revealed. I’m sure even the aloof Snivy would be entranced by it!

As you might expect, there are a plethora of samurai manga to be found, any of which would be fitting for the samurai-inspired Pokémon line of Oshawott. While my pick takes place in Japan’s Taisho era, long past the prime of samurai, you’ll find similar swordplay, codes of ethics, and Japanese flair in this gorgeous action manga! Demon Slayer truly needs no introduction, becoming a box-office-breaker in recent years thanks to its anime adaptation. However, there are some things that even the best animation studio can’t replace, and Gotouge’s stunning penmanship is one of them. I also can’t speak highly enough of Demon Slayer’s protagonist, Tanjiro, who may be just as adorable, earnest, and steadfastly determined as Oshawott itself! Ever a ray of sunshine even in the face of true evil, the manga sees Tanjiro join the katana-wielding Demon Slayer Corps after his entire family is slaughtered by such monsters. Oh Chespin fans, you poor folks have to put up with so much. I deeply admire your loyalty to your fave in spite of all the adversity, and with that in mind, I’m recommending a book about a woman who’s loyal to a fault- Cannon by Lee Lai. Our titular main character is a talented chef facing a compounding list of stressors, including an emotionally oblivious best friend, an ailing (and difficult) grandfather, the pressure-cooker environment of a line cook, and a budding workplace romance. Accentuated by a poetically-timed relaxation podcast and hallucinations of a flock of magpies, readers watch Cannon’s slow spiral towards a mental breakdown that ends up being just as cathartic for her as we hope. We all have our breaking point, and I’m sure Chespin and its evolutions would be there to support you through your crashout and defend you in the fallout.

Froakie - Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto

It’s no secret that Froakie, and especially its final evolution Greninja, are some of the most popular Pokémon in the franchise’s history. You know what else is broadly beloved, unapologetically quirky, and themed heavily around ninjas? One of the “Big Three” of early 2000’s shounen manga, Naruto! There’s a lot that can be said about this manga’s storied history- does it treat its female characters well? Not particularly. Is it the blueprint for a number of cringy anime tropes we still see today? Most likely. Is there a reason it still comes up in discussions all the time? Absolutely! A classic underdog story, Naruto’s titular character is a boy with ambitious dreams of leading his ninja village, despite said villagers shunning him for having a demon fox sealed in his body. It’s a daringly fun brawler with plenty of character development to be found between fight scenes, and if you’re a fan of the frog who uses its own tongue as a billowing scarf, you’ll have no issues with its kookiness.
