Come on down to Betty's Books to celebrate the best day of the year for comics lovers: Free Comic Book Day, on Saturday, May 3rd!

Free Comic Book Day is an annual effort to bring folks into independent comic book stores. We will be giving away copies of our Community Zine Vol. 4: SHIFTING GEARS, filled with one-page comics made by local & indie creators. This year we will also be giving away traditional single issue free comics!

There will also be raffle prizes, deals, and fun for all ages!

Scheduled Events:

• 10:30-12:00: Costume Time AND Face Painting! Come in costume and get a prize!
• 12-1:30: Portraits by artist Alain McAlister!
• 1-3: Zine Artists Meet & Greet
• 3-5: SLICE tabling and zine making!

All Day (10-6):

• FREE copies of our Community Zine Vol. 4: SHIFTING GEARS! (While supplies last)!
• FREE single issue comics (while supplies last)!
• Spend $50 or more, and roll a D20 for your discount!
• Special limited edition coloring sheets!

Join us for an author event with Niki Smith & Jules Baker in honor of the release of their book, SEA LEGS! Niki Smith is also the author and/or artist of: The Deep & Dark Blue, The Golden Hour, Ruined, and more. We are honored to have these two awesome creators at our shop!

Jules & Niki will give a short presentation on the making of SEA LEGS and how a graphic novel comes together followed by a Q&A. Attendees can also design and take home their own comic book stickers at the event!

Enjoy our latest Zine Make & Swap! Attendees will:

• Learn from local artist Amanda Greene a brief history of the medieval bestiary
• Take inspiration from the early encyclopedic format of the medieval bestiary to document and ascribe meaning to our own natural world (real or imaginary)
• Learn how to make your own zine
• Participate in a zine swap (bring some to share, or swap what you've made!)
• Have the chance to buy some of Amanda's work

Betty's Books and Arkadin Cinema & Bar are teaming up to bring you a special NANA book club! 

Come to watch the first few episodes of the cult-classic anime and enjoy a discussion about NANA after the showing. NANA, beloved for its characters and honest portrayal of early adulthood, follows two twenty-year-old girls both named Nana, who meet by chance on a train and become best friends. Since its inception, NANA and its creator, Ai Yazawa, have developed a devoted following, and if you're interested in delving into the NANA-verse, or exploring other works by Yazawa, Betty's Books will have tons of manga options available for purchase before and after the showing. So come on down for a manga & anime bonanza!

Commemorate National DIPG Awareness Day at Betty’s Books!

DIPG, or diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, is a rare and aggressive form of childhood brain cancer, with approximately 150-300 children diagnosed per year in the United States. One of these courageous kids? St. Louis’ own Nora Bunn.

Last March, then just 6 years old, sweet, spunky and spirited Nora was diagnosed with DIPG. During her cancer battle, Nora fought this devastating disease with the courage and mettle of someone twice her size and many times her age. Her story and infectious sparkle spread far and wide, teaching everyone in her orbit what it means to #BeFearless.

On March 6, a year shy of her diagnosis and just days before her 7th and a half birthday, Nora completed her journey with DIPG, leaving behind her mom, dad, 9-year-old sister, older brother, and many furry friends and family members who are learning to live with her loss.

Help us honor this sweet girl and the sparkle she has left on all our lives at Betty’s Books in Webster Groves on Saturday, May 17th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Pick up a copy of Nora’s book “Sparkle of Love,” which she wrote and illustrated while fighting DIPG, or take home a bottle of Unicorn Sparkle, a sweet, cinnamon-y spice blend that makes for the perfect addition to your morning coffee or favorite baked goods. All proceeds from your purchase will go towards Nora’s Sparkle of Love Project, a local non-profit supporting pediatric brain tumor research and the families affected by childhood cancer.

So mark your calendars for May 17th and join us in fighting childhood brain cancer one sparkle at a time. We hope to see you there!
